Making Opera Part of South Carolina

The Palmetto Opera, now in its ninth full season, with its international casts also incorporates Midlands-area opera professionals and students in its full opera productions, concerts, and monthly Opera Thursdayperformances. Opera Thursday is performed the first Thursday of the month and features local and regional opera singers. Performances are at Villa Tronco restaurant in Columbia and other venues throughout the year. The Palmetto Opera’s educational program for high schools gives students an introduction to the world of opera and the experience of live grand opera.

Columbia had not had a professional opera season in over 28 years when The Palmetto Opera began in 2001. People from over 28 zip codes outside of Columbia attended its last production, La Traviata in January 2020 at the Koger Center for the Arts.

The Palmetto Opera is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit arts organization.
